From its northwest Atlanta location on Martin L. King, Jr. Drive, the HEALING Community Center manages to serve over 1,500 patients with primary care and specialty clinics that include dental care, mental health and OB/GYN services. The Center attained Federal Qualified Health Care status in 2013 yet it remains committed to addressing the social determinants of health through all of its patient services.
In 2015, an additional 600 pediatric patients were added to its patient roster when a retiring pediatrician referred all the children and youth in his practice to the HEALing Community Center. This mass referral affirmed that the HEALing Community Center gained the respect and approval of medical practitioners in the northwest Atlanta community.
According to founder Dr. Charles Moore, the creation of the HEALing Community Center marked a turning point in his life:
“…I began to see all of the medical problems that were not being addressed. I also began to realize that in many cases people were just not aware of other options that could be taken that would improve their health. I soon came to understand that sometimes it is not the size of the act- big or small – but it is the act itself that can put things into motion. That action can open the door to provide not only access through barriers allowing patients to get healthcare, but also provide a conduit for healthcare professionals to do what we went into medicine for originally – to provide care for those most in need.”
